Lolita's Personality

If they are not socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries so the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They should spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are is also a great companion for children.
Despite their adoring nature, these birds are very loud and can be a distraction to those living close by. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud calls, which could be disruptive to those living in apartments or condos.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are hard to differentiate. Because of macaw purchase , DNA testing is the only method to determine sex. Once the bird's sex is established, breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, vowed to work on an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to eventually open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
